Aigues-Mortes

Modern name
Aigues-Mortes
Modern country
France
Aigues-Mortes is a town on the southern French coast, east of Montpellier, whose name ("stagnant water") comes from the marshes that surround it. In the 13th century the town was given many improvements by Louis IX and Philip III, French kings who wanted to reduce their maritime dependence on the Italian cities. Dati uses Aigues-Mortes as an orientation point for his discussion of North African geography, noting Algiers is "across from" it. Campbell #415.
