Alto Luogo

Ancient name
Agios Theologos
Modern name
Selçuk (formerly Ayasoluk), Selçuk
Modern country
Turkey
While Ephesus was a well-known Roman port along the coast of Asia Minor, by Dati's day its river mouth had silted up and settlement had shifted about a kilometer away to a hilltop site known as Agios Theologos under the Byzantines, of which the Turkish Ayasoluk (also Ayasuluk) and Italianized Alto Luogo (Italian for "High Place") are derivatives. While Dati's text mentions both Ephesus and Alto Luogo, the maps in the Sfera manuscripts generally only label Alto Luogo (between Messi to the south and Lesmirre to the north). Campbell #1392.
