Assyria generally refers to the ancient Assyrian empire, but the quirks of medieval Italian spelling mean that textual readings vary between ancient Assyria and contemporary (medieval) Syria. For medieval Europeans Assyria was more or less interchangeable with Persia, Chaldea, and Babylonia.
