Babylon, Babylonia

Ancient name
Babylonia
Modern country
Iraq
The medieval Italian term Babilonia referred both to the ancient city of Babylon and the ancient state of Babylonia (see also Mesopotamia, Assyria, Chaldea). Most of the labels on the Sfera maps seem to indicate a city rather than a region, however, and often mark it with its famous landmark the Tower of Babel. Note that medieval European sources often referred to Cairo as Babilonia.
