Baku, now the capital of Azerbaijan, is located on a large peninsula poking out into the Caspian Sea. In Dati's day it was the capital of the kingdom of Shirvan in the Caucasus. On premodern maps, especially those with Italian vernacular influence, the Caspian Sea is often labeled the "Sea of Baku" after it.
