Baghdad

Modern name
Baghdad
Modern country
Iraq
The capital of present-day Iraq, Baghdad was founded in 762 CE by the Abbasid caliph Al-Mansur and very quickly became the largest city in the world. Although it was sacked by the Mongols in 1258 and the forces of Timur (aka Tamerlane) in 1401, it was still a well-known provincial capital and center of trade in Dati's day. It is generally paired in La sfera with the ancient city of Nineveh, its neighbor along the Tigris River in Mesopotamia.
