Barbaria

Modern name
North Africa
Barbaria, traditionally known in English as the Barbary Coast, comprises the coastal areas of central and western North Africa from Morocco to Tunisia, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlas Mountains. Its name comes from the Berber tribes that inhabit these areas. Some of the Sfera maps distinguish different parts of the region: Barbaria di Ponente (West Barbaria), Barbaria di Levante (East Barbaria) and Barbaria di Mezzo Dì (South Barbaria). See Lotfi Ben Rejeb, "'The general belief of the world': Barbary as Genre and Discourse in Mediterranean History," European Review of History 19.1 (2012): doi:10.1080/13507486.2012.643607.
