The ancient city of Beirut, now the capital of Lebanon, was one of the major cities of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem until its fall in 1291. In the 15th century it was still an important trading port under Mamluk rule. It tends to appears in premodern maps as Baruti-di-Soria, Beirut-in-Syria, since the region encompassing the Crusader States was broadly known as Syria. See also Tripoli (Syria) and Syrian Sea.
