Bugia or Buggea—now Béjaïa, Algeria—was a major North African port in Dati's day, rivaling Cairo and Tunis for size and frequented by Pisan, Genoese, Catalan, and Spanish merchants. While generally part of the Hafsid empire, the emirs of Bugia were frequently semi-autonomous. Bugia often appears in English-language sources by its French colonial name Bougie. Campbell #1725.
