Dati refers to Charena as un monte di miglia trecento / "a mountain [range] 300 miles long" (3.34.5-6), and associates it with the Atlas mountains, a range that stretches across north Africa. The Catalan or Cresques Atlas explains: "All this mountain range is called Carena by the Saracens and Claris Mountains by the Christians."
