Cartageña in the later Middle Ages was the sole Mediterranean port belonging to the Crown of Castile. (Castile also had a port on the Atlantic coast at Cadiz, but the Nasrid Emirate of Granada separated the two sections of coastline.) Note that Dati's spelling for Cartageña, Cartagine, is the same spelling as is used for the ancient site of Carthage. Campbell #330.
