Carthage

Ancient name
Carthago
Modern country
Tunisia
The Punic capital of Carthage is now generally understood to have been located on the site of modern-day Tunis, but Dati's information locates it closer to Biserti (Bizerte). Its inclusion on the Sfera maps supports the idea that Dati's geography is more historical or cultural than strictly practical, since he notes in La sfera that Carthage no longer exists. Some of the manuscripts, in fact, feature maps whose illustrators were careful to distinguish Carthage from contemporary sites by drawing ruins instead of a city. Note that the medieval Italian for Carthage—Cartagine or Carthagine—is the same toponym that is used for Cartageña. Campbell #1687.
