Caspian Sea

The world's largest lake, the Caspian Sea is located east of the Black Sea, and separated from it by the mountainous region of the Caucasus. It generally appears on the Sfera maps by its Italian vernacular name, the "Sea of Baku" (mare di bacu and variants thereof), due to the important port and capital of Baku (now the capital of Azerbaijan) on its western coastline. Some maps also or alternatively list it as the Caspian Sea (mare caspio), a classical name that suggests influence from the Ptolemaic mapping tradition.
