Corsica is a large island in the Mediterranean Sea between Sardinia and the coast of Liguria (northwestern Italy). In Dati's lifetime, control of the islands of Sardinia and Corsica was contested between autonomous rulers, the Genoese, and the Aragonese (who also controlled Sicily and the Balearic islands). Unlike in Sardinia, the Genoese kept a close hold on the island and by 1450 Corsica was being ruled by the Genoese Banco di San Giorgio. Genoese control would last until 1755. Most Sfera maps of the Western Mediterranean label Sardinia, but Corsica only appears in one manuscript (Par1).
