Cyprus is a large island in the eastern Mediterranean, between Asia Minor and the coast of the Levant. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily and Sardinia. In the late Middle Ages it was controlled by the Lusignan dynasty, remaining a major crusader stronghold after the fall of Acre in 1291. After the death of the last Lusignan king in 1473, it came under Venetian influence as the late king's widow, Caterina Cornaro, was from Venice; it was then conquered by the Ottomans in 1570.
