While Ephesus was a well-known Roman port along the coast of Asia Minor, its river mouth had largely silted up by Dati's day and settlement had shifted about a kilometer away to the hilltop site of Alto Luogo. While Dati's text mentions Ephesus as a topographical waypoint, the maps in the Sfera manuscripts generally include Alto Luogo (and never Ephesus), between Messi to the south and Lesmirre to the north, and facing the island of Samos. Both sites (Ephesus and Alto Luogo) are now nearly 10 kilometers from the coast. Campbell #1392a.
