Famagusta is a port on the island of Cyprus, which grew in the Middle Ages from a small village to one of the richest cities in the medieval world, especially after the fall of Acre in 1291, when many Levantine Christians decamped to Lusignan-controlled Cyprus. The city was seized by the Genoese in 1372 and the Venetians in 1489.
