Dati's hometown of Florence appears in the text or on the maps of La sfera only very rarely; this is probably because Florence was not a great Mediterranean port (although its citizens had ambitions) and also because La sfera is almost exclusively focused on places that would have been foreign to Florentines of Dati's day. Both textual mentions of Florence in La sfera are exclusively situational—that is, they are mentioned only to orient the reader to someplace more foreign—while of the three map occurrences, one is almost certainly an error.
