Foia was the medieval name for ancient Phocaea, located along the west coast of Asia Minor between Landermitti and Lesmirre and a rich source of the mineral alum, which was crucial to the textile trade. Like its island neighbor Mytilene, Foia was controlled by the Genoese in the later Middle Ages, first in fief from the Byzantines and later from the Ottomans. Campbell #1381.
