Gallipoli

Ancient name
Kallipolis
Modern name
Gallipoli
Modern country
Turkey
The Gallipoli peninsula extends into the Aegean Sea along the northwest side of the Dardanelles. The city of Gallipoli is a port on the southern side of the peninsula where the Dardanelles meets the Sea of Marmara. After a devastating earthquake in 1354, it became the first Ottoman conquest on the Balkan (European) side of the strait—and therefore the base from which the Ottoman Turks would later expand across the Balkans. We have generally assumed from their position that Gallipoli toponyms in the Sfera map corpus refer to the city rather than the entire peninsula. Campbell #1054.
