Gomorrah, like Sodom, was a Biblical city destroyed by God for its sins. Medieval Christians believed the Dead Sea was formed by God's destruction of these two cities, so the Dead Sea was often known as the Lake of Sodom; some manuscripts expand that to call it the mare di sodoma e gamorra (Sea of Sodom and Gomorrah). Note that medieval Italian spellings of Gomorrah are easily confused with the island of La Gomera, in the Canary Islands.
This toponym does not appear in the poem, only on the maps accompanying it.
