Laiazzo

Ancient name
Aegeae
Modern name
Yumurtalık
Modern country
Turkey
The port of Laiazzo, now Yumurtalık, Turkey, is located in the Gulf of Alexandretta (part of the Syrian Sea) in the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea. In the 13th century it became an important Mediterranean port for the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia; its significance for East-West trade was magnified after the fall of Acre in 1291, until surpassed in importance by Genoese and Venetian trade routes through the Black Sea. Note that the range of spellings for Laraccia (Morocco), La Rassa (Egypt), Larissa (Egypt), Laleccia (Syria), and Laiazzo (Turkey) closely overlap in medieval Italian. Campbell #1478.
