The island of Lango, now known as Kos, lies northwest of Rhodes in the Dodecanese archipelago in the Aegean Sea, south of Samos and off the western coast of Asia Minor. While the Genoese had controlled Samos since the 11th century, starting in the 14th century they rented it to the Knights Hospitaller, whose base was on nearby Rhodes.
