Laraccia

Ancient name
Lixus
Modern name
al-ʿArāʾish (Morocco)
Modern country
Morocco
Laraccia was founded as the ancient city of Lixus in the 12th century BCE, but today it goes by both its French colonial name of Larache and its Arabic name of al-ʿArāʾish. There was an Almohad fortress here in the Middle Ages, but it was sacked by the Spanish in 1270 and the Portuguese in 1471. Note that the range of spellings for Laraccia (Morocco), La Rassa (Egypt), Larissa (Egypt), Laleccia (Syria), and Laiazzo (Turkey) closely overlap in medieval Italian—and at least two of them, Laraccia and Larissa, share the same modern name of Al-Arish. Campbell #1805.
