Mediterranean Sea

Ancient name
Mare Magnum
Modern name
Mediterranean Sea
Dati distinguishes two main terrestrial bodies of water: the Ocean Sea, which covers about two-thirds of the globe, and the Mediterranean Sea, which is formed by water from the Ocean Sea pouring in through the Strait of Gibraltar to cover the central area in between the three known continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa. La sfera also gives separate names to colloquially-understood sections of the Mediterranean such as the Barbary Sea, the Syrian Sea, and the Egyptian Sea or Sea of Damietta.
