Like Varna, Mesember is now a major Black Sea resort (known as Nessebar), along the western coast between Varna and Scanfida. Its highly defensible medieval fortress stood on a rocky promontory connected to the mainland by only a thin isthmus. It is one of a group of sites along the northern and western coast of the Black Sea that appear in only a single Sfera manuscript (Ashb7). Campbell #1082; Gordeev 349–50.
This toponym does not appear in the poem, only on the maps accompanying it.
