The city of Messina was a major port city and naval base on the eastern side of the island of Sicily. It lies along the Strait of Messina (2-3 miles wide) which separates Sicily from the Italian mainland. Note that Messina (Italy) is different from both Messa (Morocco) and Messi (Anatolia).
