Nicosia was the capital of the medieval kingdom of Cyprus. It is located inland, while the island's major port is Famagusta. The city was sacked by the Genoese in 1373 and the Mamluks in 1426; after the death of the last Lusignan king of Cyprus it came under Venetian control in 1489.
