Nile River

Ancient name
Nilus
Modern name
Nile
Modern country
Egypt
Most of the Sfera maps label the Nile River by that name (Nilo or Nillo). Dati's text, however, notes two alternate names: First, the river's medieval Italian name, Caligine, literally translates to “fog” or “haze” but is actually an Italianization of Khalij, the Arabic word for “canal.” Secondly, the Biblical Gihon River was understood to be equivalent to the Nile. While the Gihon (Gion) appears on many Sfera maps as an eastern tributary of the Nile, Caligine does not appear on the maps at all, only in the poem.
