The city of Nineveh, on the site of present-day Mosul (Iraq), was the capital of Assyria under the Neo-Assyrian Empire; its wickedness and destruction are foretold in several books of the Old Testament (Nahum, Isaiah, Zephaniah, Tobit), but the book of Jonah relates God's mercy upon the city. It is generally paired in La sfera with the medieval city of Baghdad, its neighbor along the Tigris River in Mesopotamia.
