Persia refers to a region of western Asia roughly corresponding to present-day Iran; in the later Middle Ages it was controlled in turn by the Ilkhanate, Timurids, Qara Qoyunlu, and Safavids. Europeans in Dati's day tended to use Persia as a "modern" equivalent of Chaldea, Assyria, Mesopotamia, and Babylonia.
