Off the southwestern corner of Asia Minor lies the island of Rhodes, which is the main island of the Dodecanese archipelago, which also includes its neighbor Lango. Rhodes was controlled in Dati's day by the crusading military order of the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of Rhodes or the Knights of St John. Refugees from the loss of the crusader states in 1291, they had retreated to Cyprus, but after some conflict with the island's rulers they looked around for another base, and finally took Rhodes after a 4-year siege in 1310.
