Medieval Samachia was a commercial and administrative capital of the kingdom of Shirvan in the Caucasus (the most important after Baku) and a key nexus of the Silk Road, being located both north of Tauris and along the direct route between Baku and the Black Sea (e.g. the ports of Lo Vati or Trebizond).
