Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily; it lies north of Sicily and off the west coast of Italy. Its largest city, now as formerly, is Cagliari at the southern tip of the island. In Dati's lifetime, control of the islands of Sardinia and Corsica was contested between autonomous Sardinian rulers, the Genoese, and the Aragonese (who also controlled Sicily and the Balearic islands)—but by 1420 Sardinia was firmly under Aragonese control. Note that some spelling variants for Sardinia (sardigna) overlap or get confused with those for the Spanish city of Salobreña (salavigna).
