Sarmatia appears in only a single manuscript (Bos) in the area north and east of the Black Sea, roughly the same region as Taurica, Tartaria, Sauromate, and Scythia. The same manuscript places sarmatia in europa in the same area, as distinguished from Sarmatia in Asia, further east. Both terms appear commonly on 15th-century Ptolemaic maps.
