Dati describes Savasto as a great city of Asia Minor, halfway between Simisso and Tarsus (in other words, inland on the Anatolian plateau). While it passed from one Islamicate dynasty to another (including the Seljuks, Ilkhanids, Timurids, Eretnids, and Ottomans) in the later Middle Ages, it remained an important center of trade and Islamic education. Note that it is different from both Samastro (on the coast of northern Asia Minor) and Sevastopol (in the Caucasus).
