The toponym Sea of Trebizond appears in 10 Sfera manuscripts, often in tandem with Mare Maggiore (the Black Sea). It generally indicates the eastern end of the Black Sea, off the major port of Trebizond, in much the same way as the Sea of Damietta does for the southeastern Mediterranean. At least one manuscript, however, seems to equate the two, with the label mare magiore cioe mari de tribisonda ("the Black Sea, that is, the Sea of Trebizond").
