Sevastopol, a Black Sea port now known as Sukhumi (Abkhazia/Georgia), was a major trade nexus and administrative center under the medieval Georgian kings. As with neighboring Pezzonda, the Genoese maintained a major presence there from the late 13th century until 1456; the city was an especially important center for the Black Sea slave trade. Note the distinction between Savasto and Sevastopol. Campbell #1227; Gordeev 159–61.
