Sodom was a Biblical city destroyed by God for its sins. Medieval Christians believed the Dead Sea was formed by God's destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, so the Dead Sea was often known as the Lake of Sodom (lago di sodoma) and some Sfera manuscripts show the ruins of Sodom under the waters of the Dead Sea.
