Spain

Ancient name
Hispania
Modern name
Spain
Modern country
Spain
Spain, like Italy, serves on the Sfera maps as a geographic descriptor for the Iberian peninsula rather than a political label. The kingdoms of Aragon and Castile (which were not yet unified in Dati's day) are never labeled, while versions of Spagnia are quite common. The variation of forms shows the reliance of spelling on pronunication, with a variety of instances spanning the distance from the classical Hispania to the modern Italian Spagna.
