Tauris—now the city of Tabriz, Iran—was a Silk Road nexus that served as the capital of several states in the later Middle Ages, including the post-Mongol Ilkhanate and the Qara Qoyunlu. It was sacked by Timur in 1392 and incorporated as the capital of the Safavid empire in 1502.
