Ancient name
Tenedos
Modern name

Modern country
Turkey
The island of Tenedos sits in the Aegean Sea, north of Mytilene and Chios. Its strategic position at the mouth of the Dardanelles has given it a contentious history—in the late Middle Ages this made it a target of Byzantine, Genoese, Venetian, Turkish, and Ottoman control. For example, the 1381 Treaty of Turin that ended the War of Chioggia between Genoa and Venice required Venice to abandon Tenedos, leaving it as a kind of unoccupied demilitarized zone. This continued until Mehmed II occupied the island in 1455 after his conquest of Constantinople, making it the first Aegean island controlled by the Ottoman Turks.
