The second-largest city in modern Greece, Thessalonica is the historic capital of Macedonia and in certain eras acted as co-capital of the Byzantine Empire alongside Constantinople. It is located in the northwestern corner of the Aegean Sea. While Thessalonica was captured by the Ottomans in 1378, there was a brief period of contestation from 1403 to 1430 (during an Ottoman civil war) when the city was again controlled by Byzantine and/or Venetian forces. Although the city was sacked in 1430 when the Ottomans regained possession, this did not substantially affect the city's prestige as a trade hub. Thessalonica only appears on the Sfera maps in a relatively small group of 10 manuscripts. Campbell #1012.
This toponym does not appear in the poem, only on the maps accompanying it.
