Acre

Ancient name
Ptolemais
Modern name
Akko
Modern country
Israel
The crusader city of Acre in the southern Levant was enormously important during the Middle Ages, and the last stronghold of the Latin kingdoms prior to its fall in 1291; at that point the city was destroyed by the Mamluks and continued to exist only as a small fishing village. Its inclusion in texts like Dati's (written over a century later) attests to its continuing major role in Europeans' mental geography of the Levant. See also Ascalon, Jaffa, and Caesarea. Campbell #1519.
