The crusader city of Acre in the southern Levant was enormously important during the Middle Ages, and the last stronghold of the Latin kingdoms prior to their fall in 1291; at that point the city was destroyed by the Mamluks and continued to exist only as a small fishing village. Its inclusion in texts like Dati's (written over a century later) attests to its continuing major role in Europeans' mental geography of the Levant. See also Ascalon, Jaffa, and Caesarea. Campbell #1519.
