Volga River

Modern name
Volga River
Modern country
Russia
The Volga River flows south of the Russian steppe and empties into the Caspian Sea. Dati never refers to it by name in La sfera: "a great river spreads across this land, which joins the two tributaries, the Edil and the Tir; most of the time it is frozen by the cold. The great city of Sarai is located there" (4.20.5–8). The river however does appear by its medieval name, the Ras River (rassa fiume), in a single Sfera manuscript (Bos).
