Alexandria, Egypt, was once the capital of the Ptolemaic kingdom and remained the main commercial, intellectual, and cultural center of the Hellenistic world into late antiquity. Even after the transfer of the capital to Cairo (Fustat) in the 7th century, it remained one of the eastern Mediterranean's most important ports. Several of Dati's relatives were part of Florentine diplomatic/commercial embassies to Mamluk Alexandria in the 1420s. Campbell #1556.
