A rocky isthmus jutting out into the Strait of Gibraltar from the African continent, Ceuta is today an autonomous Spanish territory. In Dati's day it was part of the Marinid Kingdom of Fez until captured by the Portuguese in 1415—an attack in which King John of Portugal's forces included his son Henry, later better known as Prince Henry the Navigator. Note that some manuscripts mistakenly combine the toponyms for Setta and Arzilla (e.g. santa arzola). Campbell #1798.
