In the Ptolemaic tradition, China refers to the easternmost regions of Asia known to the ancients. It is generally taken as referring to southern China and mainland southeast Asia, for which merchants more often used maritime routes, as opposed to Serica (northern China), which was more commonly reached via the overland Silk Road routes.
