Morocco

Modern name
Marrakesh
Modern country
Morocco
One of four historic capitals of the kingdom of Morocco, Morocco (now Marrakesh) is an inland city located along the Tensift River. The Almoravid and Almohad dynasties had used it as their capital, but by Dati's day the Marinid dynasty had moved their capital to Fez and the city had lost some importance. The names Morocco and Marrakesh are etymologically linked; in some languages the entire region is called the "Kingdom of Marrakesh" while starting in the 14th century European maps refer to the city as Morocco. (A similar case is Porto(gallo), Portugal.)
